Backlash! What to do?
One of the worst things that can happen to an angler is a backlash. A backlash may occur very often when an angler is pitching a bait and in any second they have a bird net in the spool and the fish is just there chasing the teasers ore even worst the bait.
When an angler has a fish hooked and a backlash on his spool the first thing that you want to do is let the Captain and the crew know that you have a backlash. If the fish keeps pulling more line the and need to apply little by little, more drag pressure so the backlash does not get even worse.
The Captain will try to help the angler with the boat backing down or making large U turns to where the fish is. As soon as the Captain makes those moves the angler should wind on to gain as much line as he can to cover the loose loops that can be dangerous for the fingers. And for the fish, grab the rod real well and hope for the best.
